Introduction
The Book Cliffs region of Utah is recognized as the premier locality globally for field teaching of sequence stratigraphy. This four-credit program applies sequence stratigraphic concepts to petroleum exploration, mining geology, and hydrology through daily outcrop work in one of the most spectacular exposures of Cretaceous strata in North America.
Course Outcomes
Students completing this program will:
- Develop a working understanding of sequence stratigraphy concepts
- Examine vertical and lateral variations in parasequences
- Measure and correlate multiple stratigraphic sections
- Create outcrop facies maps
- Distinguish between depositional controls on stratigraphy
- Apply sequence stratigraphy concepts to outcrop and core analysis
Prerequisites
Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology. Consent of the Director may substitute.
Physical Demands
Daily hikes of considerable length in rugged terrain. Temperatures in June can reach 90–100°F during the day, dropping to approximately 55°F at night. Thunderstorms are possible. Sun protection and adequate hydration are critical.
Climate and Conditions
June in the Book Cliffs brings hot, dry days (90–100°F) with cool evenings (around 55°F). Thunderstorms can develop in the afternoon. Field-appropriate sun protection, sturdy boots, and water capacity are essential.
