Introduction
New Zealand’s South Island offers an extraordinary natural laboratory for studying the full range of geological processes in a compact and visually stunning environment. This program focuses on integrated mapping techniques that link sedimentation and structure across five major geological themes: carbonate and clastic sedimentology, active tectonics, plate boundary geology, alpine mapping, and volcanic complex analysis.
Enrollment is strictly limited to the first 15 confirmed students to ensure individualized field instruction. Lodging is in cabin-style holiday parks with modern shared facilities at multiple locations across South Island.
Themes and Projects
- Carbonate and clastic sedimentology along passive and active margin sequences
- Active tectonics and fault characterization along the Alpine Fault
- Plate boundary geology and geomorphology
- Alpine geological mapping in remote mountain terrain
- Volcanic complex analysis and pyroclastic stratigraphy
Learning Outcomes
Students will develop competencies in sediment transport and depositional processes, stratigraphy of passive and active margin systems, fault characterization, and resource exploration applications of field geology.
Prerequisites
Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, Mineralogy, Petrology, and Structural Geology are required. Geophysics is recommended.
Physical Demands
Daily hikes across remote, mountainous terrain in coastal and alpine environments. High fitness levels are expected. Students must be comfortable with extended days on steep, uneven ground.
Climate
South Island weather in late December and January is highly variable. Temperatures range from 45°F (7°C) during storms to 90°F (32°C) on warm days. Layered, waterproof clothing is essential.
