Introduction
The Arizona Field Camp is based in Bullhead City, Arizona, where students encounter a remarkable variety of rock types in a compact geographic area. From Paleozoic sedimentary strata to Precambrian igneous and metamorphic complexes, the Colorado River corridor provides exceptional access to geology spanning more than a billion years.
Both the three-credit (ending January 12) and four-credit (ending January 17) options include daily field mapping, stratigraphic measurement, structural analysis, and cross-section construction. Each session is limited to 20 students.
Academic Focus
- Sedimentary strata mapping and stratigraphic analysis
- Igneous and metamorphic complex investigation
- Structural geology and cross-section construction
- Geologic map production
- Field report preparation
Prerequisites
Physical Geology and Mineralogy or Petrology. Structural Geology is recommended. Consent of the Director may substitute.
Physical Demands
Students work in rugged and steep terrain. Demanding hikes are expected. Sturdy hiking boots are mandatory. See the Physical Preparation guide.
