Introduction
The Geology Field Camp (GEOL 410) is an intensive five-week field and laboratory experience in the Black Hills region of South Dakota and Wyoming. Students map three major rock types across five weekly projects, progressing from sedimentary formations to igneous and metamorphic rocks. The curriculum emphasizes stratigraphic columns in addition to geologic maps, structural cross sections, and comprehensive field reports.
Each week comprises six days of fieldwork with Sundays free for personal activities and optional field trips. Eight-hour days are expected in the field. Lodging is provided in a dormitory setting in Rapid City, with two students per room. Two days of camping are included.
Projects
Students complete five major mapping projects during the session:
- Sedimentary stratigraphy and formation mapping
- Structural geology and cross-section construction
- Igneous rock mapping and petrographic analysis
- Metamorphic terrain mapping
- Integrated synthesis project covering all rock types
Prerequisites
Completion of the junior year of study, plus the following courses (or consent of the Director):
- Physical Geology
- Mineralogy
- Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology
- Stratigraphy and Sedimentation
- Structural Geology
Physical Demands
Field work will involve working off-trail in semi-rugged to rugged terrain and may include hikes of considerable length. Students should be in good physical condition prior to the start of camp. See the Physical Preparation guide for recommendations.
Climate
The Black Hills in late May and June can have variable weather. Expect highs in the 70s–80s°F and lows in the 50s–60s°F. Rain, wind, and occasional cold snaps are possible, especially early in the session. Waterproof gear is essential.
Required Materials
The latest edition of Compton’s Geology in the Field (1985) is required, available through Amazon for approximately $19. See the complete Equipment List for all required and recommended items.
