Geology Field Camp — Session 3

GEOL 410 · Three semester credits · June 22 – July 10, 2026

Introduction

Session Three is a condensed, three-week geology field course in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Students examine Precambrian metamorphic, Phanerozoic sedimentary, and Tertiary igneous rocks through accelerated mapping projects. The curriculum covers measuring and describing stratigraphic sections, constructing geologic maps, and drawing structural cross sections.

Lodging is in a dormitory setting, two students per room. No camping is required. The course is limited to 20 students to ensure individual attention.

  • Measure, describe, and correlate stratigraphic sections
  • Construct geologic maps of selected areas
  • Draw and interpret structural cross sections

Prerequisites

Completion of the junior year and required geology coursework, or consent of the Director. Recommended background includes Physical Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology.

Physical Demands

Field work involves semi-rugged to rugged terrain and hikes of varying length. Good physical condition is recommended prior to arrival. See the Physical Preparation guide.

Climate

Late June to mid-July in the Black Hills brings warm days (highs 70s–80s°F) and cool nights (50s–60s°F). Afternoon thunderstorms occur regularly. Bring rain gear.

Required Materials

Compton’s Geology in the Field (1985) is required, approximately $19 on Amazon. Refer to the Equipment List for all required items.
