Introduction
The Petroleum Field Camp is a three-credit field course that provides students with an intense oilfield applications experience. Participants travel to active drill sites in the Williston and/or Denver Basins to observe drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and well completion processes first-hand.
Curriculum
- Geologic and geophysical description of sedimentary basins
- Geologic maps and isopach map construction
- Geologic cross-section interpretation
- Well log analysis and correlation
- Industry software (Petrel) for reservoir modeling
- Site visits to active drilling operations, fracking sites, and producing wells
Required Equipment
- Rock hammer
- Field notebook
- Laptop computer
- Safety glasses (mandatory)
- Sturdy hiking boots (mandatory)
A full equipment list is distributed to registered students approximately 30 days before the start of camp.
Prerequisites
Physical Geology, Mineralogy, and Petrology. Stratigraphy and Structural Geology are strongly recommended. Graduate students are welcome.
